“Get Smart” Movie Gets Better With Every Viewing
As a young'un I was huge fan of the Get Smart TV series. Obviously a lot of other people at the time also liked it. It ran for five years, 138 episodes, and twice made the USA Nielsen Ratings Top 30. It was nominated for 14 Emmys and two Golden Globe Awards.
I own a couple of the Get Smart seasons on DVD and in those times when I am feeling down and melancholy and need a pick up, which seems to happen a lot these days, watching ten or twelve episodes of Get Smart sometimes helps a bit. I wish they would do a digitally enhanced 16:9 pan-and-scan version of it on DVD. But I guess that is not likely to happen.
Like a lot of Get Smart fans I was excited when the making of the Get Smart movie was announced in 2007 for release in 2008. I was pretty happy with the idea of Steve Carell playing Agent 86 Maxwell Smart, but I was less happy with Anne Hathaway being selected to play Agent 99. Don’t get me wrong. I think Anne Hathaway is a fantastic actress and she is hot to boot, but I just could not see her working out as Agent 99.
I have to admit that the first viewing left me feeling a little disappointed. At that stage I would probably have given it a pass—maybe 5.5 out of 10. And I still wasn’t happy with Anne Hathaway as Agent 99.
However over the years I have watched the movie a number of times and it is absolutely one of those movies that gets better every time you watch it. And at midnight last night I put it on again.
Damn that’s a good movie. And Anne Hathaway makes the perfect Agent 99. I just could not imagine anyone else playing Agent 99.
At this stage I am rating it a solid 8.5 our of 10.
Most likely after I watch it the next time, probably in about a year or so, it could make it to 9 out of 10 because it just seems to get better with every viewing—a bit like Silverado, Serenity, The 5th Element, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
